"Cook at home. Avoid the hawker centre." It's the advice everyone gives, and almost nobody follows. In Singapore, lunch is at the kopitiam, and dinner is too, some days.
Good news: you don't have to give up hawker food. Same stall, a smarter order.
Quick answer: You can eat healthily at a hawker centre. Fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein such as fish, chicken, tofu or egg, and a quarter with rice or noodles. If you train, aim for 20 to 40g of protein a meal. Ask for skin off, extra vegetables and less sauce, choose steamed, braised or soup dishes over fried, and leave most of the soup, where much of the salt is.
Eating out is the norm: 7 in 10 of us eat out at least once a day
According to Singapore's 2025 national health surveys, 7 in 10 residents eat out at least once a day, up from 6 in 10 in 2019.
Cook at home. Avoid the hawker centre.
Lunch is at the kopitiam. Dinner too, some days.
The goal isn't to avoid hawker food. It's to order it well, especially if you train.
Step 1: the plate
Chicken rice? Add more greens. Use the Health Promotion Board's My Healthy Plate as your guide:
If you train: make sure the protein is actually on the plate. Aim for 20 to 40g a meal.
Step 2: the protein. Not every plate carries it
| Per plate | Protein | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken herbal soup | 24g | 145 |
| Duck rice, skin off | 24g | 530 |
| Roast chicken rice | 25g | 607 |
| Char kway teow | 23g | 744 |
| Fried carrot cake | 2g | 493 |
Fried carrot cake: almost no protein for nearly 500 calories. Herbal soup: about the same protein as chicken rice for a quarter of the calories. Pair it with rice and greens.

Same stall, smarter order: one small change, a real difference
| Duck rice | With skin | Skin off |
|---|---|---|
| Calories | 673 | 530 |
| Fat | 20g | 11g |
| Sodium | 545mg | 326mg |
| Protein | 24g | 24g |
Same dish, same protein. Almost half the fat, just by leaving the skin.

Step 3: the order. 6 things to say at the stall
Small asks. Every single meal.
The hidden one: salt. 95% of us eat too much
The fix: enjoy the noodles, leave most of the soup. Go easy on extra sauce. Too much sodium raises blood pressure and the risk of heart disease and stroke.

After training: your post-session hawker order
Protein, carbs and greens. All at the hawker.
One more number worth knowing
The same 2025 national surveys found that only 37.6% of Singapore residents do enough muscle-strengthening activity. Eating well matters, but so does giving that food something to build.

Same hawker. Better order.
You don't need to give up the food you love. You need to order it with intent.
Ask for extra.
Fish, chicken, tofu or egg.
That's where the salt hides.
